mushers secretHi there friends! Welcome back to Doggo Bloggo. Many people have heard of a product called Musher’s Secret. In case you haven’t though, the product is designed as a wax you put on your pup’s paws when they are walking in extreme conditions. Many sled dog owners use it to keep the dog’s paws protected on the long icy journeys. It can also be used for dogs walking on hot pavement, which in Florida is 9 months or more out of the year. I have recently discovered a DIY version of the wax that you can make yourself at home. Below is the recipe for that! Come back next week for some fun tips for keeping your pup safe during these hot summer months.

Supplies

  • 3 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Beeswax
  • Spoon
  • Double-Boiler
  • Container for end product (heat resistant glass or metal with lid)

Directions

  • This recipe makes about 3-4 oz of wax. You can substitute the double-boiler with a small pot and large pot that nest together.
  • Place double-boiler on the stove and add enough water to the bottom to bring to a rolling boil. While that is heating up add all of your ingredients to the smaller nesting pot.
  • Lower the heat and place the smaller pot into the water or onto the double-boiler. Do not cover.
  • Melt the ingredients together gently then take them off the burner. Pour the melted ingredients into a heat safe container and let them cool down.
  • Once it is cool you can apply the paw wax by rubbing a small amount on and between your pet’s paw pads.

Side Note: I have also tried this recipe in the microwave. It seems to work just as well, put all ingredients in a microwave safe container and heat in 15-30 second increments stirring between each time. In my microwave it only took 45 seconds to combine everything together. Then just let it sit, cool, then apply as needed.
