Dog Heros | Podcast Spotlight – Dog Tales

Who is your dog hero? Is it your own dog? Lily is a hero in my eyes because she has overcome so much and kept me in line at the same time without even realizing it. This week Lily and I are sharing some dog heros from one of my favorite podcasts Dog Tales. They are all so good so make sure you subscribe to the podcast to hear them all but below are my top 3 that I’ve listened to so far.
Apollo | A Hero On 9/11
Apollo was a German Shepherd on the NYPD force during the 9/11 attacks in 2001. He and his handler Peter Davis were the first search and rescue team to arrive at the south tower to search for survivors 15 minutes after it’s collapse. Apollo spent 18 hours a day for the next weeks and weeks after that day. He was nearly killed by flames and falling debris while searching. Luckily he fell into a pool of water that saved him, and he went back to work. His search and rescue efforts earned him one of the first AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE) in 2001 as well as the Dickin Medal, on behalf of all of the search and rescue dogs from this historic event.

Fido | The Faithful Dog
In latin Fido means “I Trust.” The story of this Fido is one of a undeniably faithful companion to his owner Carlo Soriani. Carlo found the injured pup on his way home from work one day and nursed him back to health. He then proceeded to follow Carlo everywhere he went. Fido would even walk him to the bus station every day and wait for Carlo to come home at the end of the day and greet him with enthusiastic joy and walk him home.
They did this for 2 years all while World War II was going on. On December 30, 1943, the factories of Borgo San Lorenzo where Carlo worked as a laborer were bombed, and Carlo Soriani was killed. Faithful Fido showed up to greet him at the afternoon bus but Carlo never returned. He went back home to his owners wife but returned to the train station every day to meet the afternoon bus for 14 years until the day he died.

Buddy | The World’s First Seeing-Eye Dog
In 1927 Buddy Morris a 19 year old blind New York man heard about a woman training dogs to be guides for blinded veterans of World War II in Switzerland. He wrote Dorothy Eustis a letter and asked if he could come train with her and her dogs. He wanted to train, take one home, and spread the word about the amazing dogs and their training. After months, he finished his training, made it back to New York City and proved the ability of his dog Buddy by crossing a dangerous intersection in front of a gaggle of reporters and other onlookers.
